“It’s not that I don’t love you, and my tears are yet to dry. But you can’t go back and forth forever and we’ve already said goodbye.”
Through these words, a young poet unearths his musical soul while severing ties with the woman he loves after her stunning betrayal. Unknowingly, in writing this ballad of liberation, he will soon evolve as one of the fastest rising stars on the pop music landscape.
The year is 1991; the place, New York City. Here we meet Johnny Elias, a college student from Brooklyn with boundless adoration for two things in life timeless popular music, and the heart of a sweet, complicated young woman who is clearly out of his league.
Megan Price not only is the object of Johnny’s affection, but also the only daughter of New York’s most powerful PR woman the indomitable Katherine Price.
Projecting that her daughter’s boyfriend will never live up to the family standard, Katherine cleverly perpetrates a series of duplicitous schemes to rid Johnny from her high-class world. But in her callous disregard, she inadvertently sets him on a determined course to his improbable musical destiny - while sending her own daughter spiraling down a path of devastation.
Poet of the Wrong Generation tells the symmetrical story of a lovable underdog and his meteoric rise to stardom, his humiliating downfall and his unprecedented attempt to reclaim his place as the unlikely musical spokesman for his generation. At the heart of Poet is a tale of star-crossed lovers and their struggle with unforeseen success and disillusionment, in an attempt to rediscover lasting harmony.
Uniquely integrating a variety of original song compositions, Poet projects the epic clash between true contentment and the fable of stardom’s rewards; a nostalgic journey through the major events of the 1990s, with a cherished cast of characters and a stunningly unpredictable conclusion. The ultimate rock & roll love story.

4 Stars out of 4
Eloquently written song lyrics highlight this successful novel by Ostrow. His paean to the music industry and true love is a compelling read. The manipulative Katherine is ever-present, which adds dimension to the story. This is a classic tale of star-crossed lovers. Johnny's up-and-down career is the thing great novels are built on.

This is a great story, set in the early to mid-nineties, during a time of massive changes within the music industry. At its heart it is a love story. But overall, it is an homage to the importance music plays in our lives and how a well written song can impact those who hear it. As a New Yorker, born and raised and an avid fan of music, particularly singer-song writers, who went to college in New York during the 90s and did attend the Paul Simon Concert in Central Park that opens the book, it definitely brought me back to that time when I was still developing my love and knowledge of music and the industry. I highly recommend it.Product details

Poet Of The Wrong Generation edition by Lonnie Ostrow Arts Photography eBooks Reviews
I'm not that into contemporary fiction generally, and I'm particularly not into fiction about music, celebrities or, well, love stories. Therefore, full disclosure, I only read this book because the author is an old acquaintance.
But I'm glad I did! It was a nice break from the type of stuff I normally read, and boy did this book bring me back to NYC in the early 90's, the last time I lived in Manhattan. If you were around NYC at that time it'll do the same for you, too, but even if not, it's a nice window into urban life in a pre-smartphone, pre-ubiquitous Internet era not so long ago, but which now seems so distant. I particularly enjoyed the references to city politics and events at the time (though I don't think my view of Mayor Giuliani's accomplishments is as positive as the author's).
The book filled me with nostalgia for what it was like to be in my 20's and single, with life an open book ahead. The writing was clear and easy to follow. While the overall arch of the story was somewhat predictable, there are little twists and turns throughout. Based on his own life experiences, the author had a lot of insight into celebrity culture, something I now understand better for having read this book.
So even if this type of book isn't your thing, I'd suggest giving it a try; it'll be a nice trip down memory lane for just about anybody who had the experience of growing up...
Frankly I did not know what to expect .
I was happily surprised by the;the broad range of believable characters, each with his/her own "story";the intense sincerity of the main characters and the ongoing soul searching and deep love between them; the way paths of the cast of characters cross.
The songs/poems were moving.I felt like the novel was a romance in the truest sense. The overlay of different couples' issues and romances provided a complexity that kept my interest. I could not put the book down!
A truly enjoyable read - the scenery, the songs, the drama are all detailed to really immerse you in the story and carry you along. A great first novel for the author.
Incredible debut! The pages are filled with nostalgia and it brought me back to all of those lost loves and the songs that shaped those relationships.
A truly special novel. This isn't just a great read. It's also a story with an original soundtrack. The beautiful song lyrics interwoven in this musical love story are real songs that are as emotional as the tale of Johnny Elias and his roller-coaster ride through stardom and misery. The other great element for me was the 1990s nostalgia. It made me feel like I was back in the 90s with these memorable characters.
Having lived in Manhattan, starting at Barnard in 1982, attending the 1991 Paul Simon concert in the park, and remaining in the city until 1998, this book was certainly very nostalgic for me. Lonnie Ostrow really knows how to tell an intriguing and multi-faceted story. Johnny Elias is a protagonist to whom the reader is easily drawn as he makes his way in the music world and deals with his emotional turmoil. There is an amazing depth of character development of many of the supporting characters making Poet a book that became hard to put down at night once I got invested in the complexities of the tale. The twists and turns, both good and bad, heroic and evil, make it one of those books that you need to just look at the next few pages before putting it down when the hour gets too late. However, I read the last 200 pages in one sitting last night! I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in music, the 90’s, NYC, tales of star-crossed lovers, and just plain humanity.
The characters of the young poet, Johnny, and his true love, as well as those of his mentor, and his girlfriend's mother, (the true villain in the novel), are well-developed and very credible. The story was engaging, full of twists, keeping me reading, and then guessing the climax. (I was wrong!!). I could not put the book down for long, and stayed up to the wee hours to finish! It was romantic, suspenseful, passionate, all at the same time, and brought back strong memories of young adulthood in the 70's and 80's . I guarantee that it will evoke a wide spectrum of emotions in the reader....a really great read! I envision a film of the same name, with classic music of "my generation."
This is a great story, set in the early to mid-nineties, during a time of massive changes within the music industry. At its heart it is a love story. But overall, it is an homage to the importance music plays in our lives and how a well written song can impact those who hear it.
